I paint my originals in oils on prepared wood board. It's been a fascinating learning experience to translate older grayscale photos into color using only my paints. I also visualize and model missing details and enjoy rendering objects or backgrounds from my imagination. The process of returning to paint over days and weeks takes me into a deeper relationship with the qualities of the one whom I'm painting. It is like a deep dive with a dear friend or an enchanting book. When the painting is done I'm wistful to part and yet excitedly happy. I look forward to deepening that friendship with another aspect of that saint, deity or cultural icon or initiating a new friendship.
